INTRODUCTION
Because we are working in the same classrooms with the same books and the same students all year long and sometimes over the course of several years, it is easy to get stuck in familiar patterns that come to be predictable – for us as much as our students. Plus, as the year/s progress/es, we get more tired. The I & E Booster is designed to provide a refreshing pick-me-up. Each day, teachers in attendance will be get to see dozens of ideas and strategies from which they can choose, with the total absence of pressure, what they consider of value to take back to their own classes in order to make their lives easier and their day to day work a little more joyful.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this three-day intensive course attendees will:
• have seen a wide range of effective classroom techniques to try out
• have been presented with a variety of activities to help meet their teaching objectives
• feel refreshed and hopefully ready to face the rest of the academic year
• have enjoyed the experience of listening to new perspectives on familiar situations
• had the opportunity to validate their current practice with colleagues and the trainer
• had the chance to question, analyse, reflect and comment on what they have seen
CONTENT
We shall cover the following areas:
• classroom management
• motivation
• class Dynamic
• task design
• rhetorical devices
• teacher/student dialogue
• managing L1 use
• testing
• exams preparation
• activities that promote fluency
• writing
• monitoring
• useful progressive teaching techniques
• useful classic teaching techniques
• differentiated instruction
METHODOLOGY
The material will be presented by way of PPT presentation and accompanying commentary. The trainer will introduce a classroom situation, issue, puzzle or challenge then suggest an effective approach, strategy, technique, activity or solution. There will be anecdotes and examples from the trainer’s own classes. Each idea will be accompanied by an abundant amount of visual material including photographs of students engaged in tasks, examples of students’ work and simple schematic diagrams. The trainer will regularly give teachers an opportunity to discuss the ideas they have seen with each other and to comment, query or challenge the trainer on any of the techniques.
A selection of articles will be made available to the teachers as well as simplified versions of the slides they see and/or a handout containing a breakdown of all the ideas. Teachers will also be invited to contact the trainer for any additional material relating to the ideas presented that they remember they would like after the course, or if they require a reminder or wish to feedback on any of the techniques they trial themselves.
The course is designed to be short but intensive, jam-packed with suggestions in order to ‘super-charge’ teachers, as it were. Therefore instead of lengthy group activities or project work and/or extended stages involving looped input (where teachers play the roles of their students and actually run through activities in their entirety) which take up lots of time, there will be numerous but shorter opportunities to teachers to interact with each other and digest the concepts offered.
