INTRODUCTION
A common difficulty that teachers sometimes express is how hard it is to get their students to produce spoken and written English. If we want to help our students increase their output in the foreign language, we need to make sure that they not only have the language support necessary, but also a safe, comfortable, and communicative environment. Furthermore, the types of activities we take part in play a crucial role in fostering more student talk in the classroom. In short, a combination of small details can have a powerful impact on students’ ability and willingness to communicate in English.
OBJECTIVES
The goal of this training course is to equip teachers with strategies and tools to promote both the written and spoken production of English on behalf of students.
Participants will experience various activities in which they see generic types of scaffolding to increase the possibility that students express themselves in English, as well as specific techniques for the production of diverse texts and more extended oral interactions. This includes key considerations when planning effective instructional sequences and procedures that can be carried out during a class. Likewise, participants will take away a series of theoretical notions to be able to support their students in the production of English in any context.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
• analyze the linguistic demand in content subjects taught in the foreign language
• plan instructional sequences that integrate content and language
• apply strategies to foster spoken and written communication in the bilingual classroom
CONTENT
• Content, structure, language and purpose of written texts in content subjects taught in English
• Language scaffolding
• Peer feedback
• Types of interaction patterns in the classroom
• Display and referential questions
• Language of and for learning
• Error correction
• The gap principle to promote communication.
METHODOLOGY
Sessions will be practical in nature, but will also include trainer input in order to create rich discussion and stimulate deep reflection. Teachers will be encouraged to share ideas and experiences so that the training can be tailored to their specific teaching contexts.
SPEAKERS
Nathan Florian has been an assistant language teacher at Centro Universitario Cardenal Cisneros since 2018, working alongside the faculty of the bilingual itineraries of the Education degrees at the university. A USA native, he holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the College of Wooster (Ohio, USA) and two Master's degrees (International Education & Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) from the Universidad de Alcalá. He worked as a language assistant for seven years in bilingual primary schools in the Madrid region and is beginning to build his expertise as a teacher trainer in the areas of bilingual education and CLIL.
Matthew Johnson has worked in the United Kingdom, Colombia and Spain as a teacher and teacher trainer since 1996. He has been a lecturer in English Language and English Language Teaching in Spain since 2002, first at the University of Alcalá and since 2009 at the Centro Universitario Cardenal Cisneros,. Matthew also teaches on the Master's programme at the Franklin Institute and collaborates as a teacher trainer for the publishers Macmillan, Pearson and Edelvives, among others. His areas of interest are bilingual education, fostering communication in the classroom, learner training, formative assessment, developing cognitive skills and flipped learning
